2004 SEASON SUMMARY
Following the shocking loss to Arkansas in the 2003
playoffs at home but coming off a 14-2 regular season record, the
expectations were pretty high for the Steamwheelers. Coach
Ingold began his third year as head coach and following some twists and
turns in players moving up, the Steamwheelers have Tim Dodge and Jeff
Hewitt back. Brian Berg joins the team at FB/LB and the front line
had to be rebuilt. Special teams had been a soft point in the team's
play and it would prove to come back and haunt them again in
2004.
Ronnie
Gordon takes the lead QB role with former Peoria team mate, Matt Pike
signing on as well. Matter of fact, they were two of many former
Pirates now on the Quad City roster. Jon Verdegan, Paul
Savich, Charles Sheffield also made the trek up I-74. Harvie
Herrington joins the team after his career in the bigs. Lineman
Chris Smith re-joins the team as does Damon Williams. Bear Brown
battles through knee injuries to become a fan favorite and a force on
defense. He was the only 'Wheeler to have a Superbowl ring when he
was with the Rams.
This was a year for contraction in the AFL and many
af2 teams were stocked with unbelievable talent. The af2 had more
parity in 2004 than any other year. It was clear the league was
changing competitively. The team ended up 10-6, winning the
division and earning yet, another playoff spot. The regular season
ended with a win at home over Louisville. The playoff seedings
worked out where Louisville would return the following week for a
divisional playoff game.
Due to poor clock management and Louisville's 3
timeouts, the Steamwheelers were unable to gain positive
yardage with questionable play calling. They turned the ball
over on downs with seconds on the clock. Louisville went for the
field goal and Ingold only had Hewitt deep in coverage. The ball
missed, hit the iron, shot down onto the turf and sprung up way over
Hewitts head and out to the 10-yard line where it landed into the hands of
Demetrius Forney who rushed the remaining few yards into the endzone to
claim a Fire victory and keep the Steamwheelers from advancing to the next
round of the playoffs for the second straight year. Ingold
took a job with the AFL's Dallas Desperados for
2005.
